Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) is a fantastic way to enjoy the water and stay active, but it’s even more fun when you bring your furry friend along for the ride. Now we are talking SUP with your pup! Whether you’re a seasoned paddleboarder or new to the sport, having the right essential water gear can make all the difference in ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for both you and your pup. In this guide, we’ll explore the essential water gear you need to SUP with your pup, from safety equipment to comfort-enhancing accessories. Get ready to hit the water with confidence and make unforgettable memories with your four-legged companion.

Although we are talking SUP with your pup, keep in mind you can also use several items listed below to kayak, boat, or just hang on the short with your furry friend.

SUP with Your Pup: Essential Water Gear You Need

Lifejacket – Indeed! It’s almost a given that dogs can swim, but it’s always smart to be safe than sorry by supplying them with a life jacket. Plus, the pups are so adorable in life jackets whether you choose one that’s bright or has fins on it. I found an awesome shark dog life jacket for around $38 in size large, but keep in mind the price will fluctuate choosing a different size or even design. Bowl – For water, just like you need to hydrate, you need to make sure your dog is also hydrated. There are compact bowls making it super easy to store them in your pack. There’s one included in the pet first aid kit I’ve mentioned below.

Water – No, I’m not talking about lake or river water, I’m talking filtered water, why I mentioned a bowl above. It’s only natural your pup tries to drink the lake or river water since it’s available, but try to avoid this as much as possible. You don’t know what toxins are present in the water based on temperature, water level, or several other factors. Like you would bring water for yourself, bring water for SUP with your pup too. You don’t want them to get ill from a fun day paddling.

Treats – No large meals to avoid your pooch pal getting sick later on. I always feed mine fruits that are good such as watermelon and bananas. If I have some type of protein like chicken I’ll feed that to my dog as well. Then of course they’re many different types of dog treats your dog may like you can bring that will be light. Again, just be mindful of what your feeding your pooch to avoid them getting sick while out in the sun or on the car ride home. I have a hard time getting mine to eat anything all day as if the pooch is too excited. As long as water is going down good all day, the doggie should be just fine.

Leash – No matter how good you think your dog is at behaving by your side, make sure to have a leash. You never know. Doggy instincts can easily kick in when they want to chase a rabbit or a squirrel that came out of nowhere.

Dog Toy – If your dog has a favorite ball or stuffed animal, bring it along to either make the most out of their experience or to ease their anxiety. Sometimes it can be a little nerve wrecking for your dog to first get on the paddleboard, or maybe the car ride. Make SUP with your pup a great time for them!

Sunscreen – Yes, they make sunscreen for dogs if you can believe that. Most of our human sunscreens contain zinc oxide which can be toxic for dogs, but they do make special sunscreens just for dogs. Doing a general search of this online, you’ll be able to find reviews which will help you decide on which sunscreen to go with.

Traction Pad – An extra little security to make your dog a little more comfortable on the paddleboard. Many paddleboards have pretty good, covered traction already, at least mine does, but there are additional options to keep your board extra covered to SUP with your pup.

First Aid Kit – A pet first aid kit vs a regular first aid kit comes in handy since it usually contains vet tape, a collapsible/portable water bowl, and tweezers to pull out any ticks. I found a decent one for only $18 on Amazon with good reviews: https://amzn.to/4ccEhgz.

After you get your SUP pup home it’s always a great idea to give them a bath. If they got in the water, you never know what could be in there and what may irritate their skin later on. Also, if you’re in an area known for ticks, it’s a great idea to check them to make sure a tick didn’t sneak on them. Bonus here if you have that first aid kit for pets.

Lets be real, if we’re going to hike in the summer, water nearby to help keep cool is a must. And no we’re not talking about just water to drink, which of course, is number one important. Stay hydrated! Now what to expect on this hike, a series of beautiful waterfalls cascading along the East Verde River. These falls create natural pools all along the hike which make them perfect to cool off when dealing with the heat. Overall the hike is easy for all ages, there are a few minor areas to climb over the rocks.

Water Wheel in Payson is located about 2 hours north of Phoenix, Arizona. Although some parts of the road is curvy, the drive is very scenic as you watch the landscape go from cactuses to pine trees.

Enjoy the Ride with a Float Down the River – Salt River, Arizona
You can use a service to float down the river, or you can do what we do and tag team with your fellow tubers to coordinate the drop off and pickup points. Expect to float along with gentle currents, with mild rapids in a few spots while enjoying views of wild horses, the saguaros, and birds you won’t see in the city.

The Salt River gets especially busy on the weekends and holidays so get there at a strategic time, either very early, or late afternoon. We go to Goldfield “Stop 4” to drop off a car then hall everyone up to the Water Users “Stop 1” to blow up tubes and load all our necessities on the tubes. This float is about 4ish hours, full sun (unless you have built in shade on your float) so sunscreen and water are an absolute must!

Feel Like You’re at the Beach – Lake Havasu, Arizona
We can’t even begin to describe this beautiful beach-like experience with shimmering blue waters and over 400 miles of “sandy” shoreline. The lake’s sandy beaches, particularly at popular spots like Rotary Beach and London Bridge Beach, provide ample space for sunbathing, picnicking, and building sandcastles, making you feel as if you’ve been transported to a coastal paradise. Sunblock – I prefer the lotion to apply first, then spray for a touch up throughout the day. Even overcast can burn you so don’t be fooled if the sun is hiding behind the clouds for the day.

Bug Spray – Again, I prefer going with the waterproof lotion as opposed to the spray. I feel like those direct skin contacts just stick better. I get eaten alive so if I can do anything to avoid it, I strive to do so.

Compact Soft Waterproof Cooler – The key to finding the right cooler for your paddleboard is usually the size. You don’t want to get something too large and fill it with items that could really weigh it down (limit the beer – kidding lol). Now be mindful of what you’d like to fill the cooler with. This part I struggle with as I want to take the whole pantry.

Electric Paddleboard Pump – This is a lifesaver if you have an inflatable paddleboard! My paddleboard came with a pump, but my goodness I struggled to fill it up and make sure it was filled to the correct PSI. Keep the manual pump just in case for a backup, but I strongly encourage investing in an electric pump. Water, Water, Water! – I can’t emphasize this enough, hydrate like a mother! Dehydration sneaks up on you like no other. You might feel fine for a while, but once it hits you, it can be difficult to rehydrate yourself once you get to that point.

Paddleboard Lights – Ever been on a moonlight paddle? I strongly encourage it if not, truly magical. For every night paddle, lights are one of the must have accessories for the paddleboard. It will make the experience even more fantastic.

Cup Holder – I mean I think this is a given, you must have something to hold your beverage right? Depending on your paddleboard, there are different attachments you can get to fit.

Cool Cup – With the above being said, you really need a cool cup as a part of your accessories for the paddleboard. You’ll definitely need one with a close top to ensure you don’t catch any lake/river water in it.

Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker – The sound of the water, rapids, and waves can be very therapeutic, but having a good playlist to listen along with can make the day extra special out on the water.

Drybag – Honestly, I use a gallon Ziplock bag myself to hold my key and phone. Then I’ll keep it secure in the pocket of my soft cooler. You’ll want to keep in mind that in case your board gets flipped, it’ll be easier to retrieve your items out of the water.

Water Shoes – I don’t know above you, but I’ll be the first to say my feet are super sensitive. While I’m out in the water, I have to have something on my feet. No rock stepping for me, no thank you! I do like a good pair I can easily remove and secure to my board once I’m on it.

Paddle – This is a given when it comes to accessories for the paddleboard, but choosing the right one for your day is a must. If you plan on standing throughout the day while on your paddleboard, you’ll need the one sided paddle, with adjustment capabilities. If you plan on sitting the whole time, it might be nice to paddle with a kayak paddle (double sided paddle). The paddle can really be as simple as possible and not super expensive. We’re not competing so the paddle can be easy breezy simple.

First Aid Kit – Whether you want to simplify your life by buying a premade one, or make your own, you definitely should keep one of these handy. You never know when you’ll need it.
